The summer’s over and your children have returned to school. You want to do what you can to minimize their risk of health issues. In the first blog in this series, we examined ways that you can ensure that their backpack won’t cause neck or back problems, and we looked at ways to help them avoid problems associated with poor posture in the classroom. Here are some additional tips to help ensure that your children don’t have adverse physical health consequences when they return to school.
Make Certain They Prepare for Any Physical Activity
Whether your child was active in school sports or was merely a participant in mandatory curriculum-based physical fitness classes, chances are they weren’t very methodical in following a fitness regime during their summer vacation. It’s important that they ease their way back into whatever fitness or athletic program with which they are involved. As they start to reintegrate into fitness programs, they’ll need to:
- Be careful to take the time to warm up and stretch—10 minutes minimum
- Stretch when they are done with practice or physical education
- Ease their way back into fitness—many injuries come when formerly fit people try to get back into a program too quickly
- Diversify their fitness regime to avoid repetitive stress injury
